Decorative panels

Around 1850, the first decorated panels on the prows of Moliceiros began to appear on moliceiro boats

Alberto Souto in "Litoral" 1954

"Entre os barcos mais curiosos e expressivos de todos os tempos e de todo o mundo, um há que pode afoitamente apontar-se e distinguir-se - é o moliceiro que vive entre nós nas águas salgadas e salobras da Ria de Aveiro, junto ao mar e ao delta do vouga..."

The motifs that decorate moliceiros are a matter of sensitivity. Even today, in the Ria de Aveiro, you'll find moliceiros decorated with bouquets of flowers in their bow nozzles.

There are various reasons for this, but they started out being mostly religious. One hypothesis put forward by João Pereira Lemos (Book ‘Tu, Moliceiro’, 2022 page 32) suggests that the first figures and captions appeared on a moliceiro anchored at the Ribeira quay, depicted (supposedly by a bad painter who, in order to identify the Saint Anthony he had just painted, put the caption ‘Santo Antonho’.

From here came the figurative ornaments and legends that were left to honour the saints of their devotion.

The author continues..."Diamantino Dias suggests another explanation, suggesting that the first figurative drawings were born from the paintings of wavy bands representing rows of moliço, with several rows of hypos, representing the more than 20 species of moliço.
