Planning to visit Aveiro for just one day? The city is compact and easy to explore, making it perfect for a day trip

From its canals and traditional moliceiro boats to Art Nouveau architecture, local sweets and historic salt pans, here are some of the experiences we recommend.

1. Explore the historic centre

Start your visit in the centre of Aveiro. Walk along the canals, discover the colourful buildings and admire some of the city's beautiful Art Nouveau architecture.

Take your time to explore the streets around the Canal Central and Rossio area.

2. Take a traditional moliceiro boat tour

A visit to Aveiro is not complete without a ride on a traditional moliceiro boat.

These colourful boats were traditionally used in the Ria de Aveiro to collect moliço, an aquatic plant once used as agricultural fertiliser.

Today, a moliceiro tour is one of the best ways to discover Aveiro from the water. During the approximately 45-minute tour, you can see some of the city's main landmarks while learning more about its canals, history and traditions.

It is an easy experience to include in any one-day itinerary.

3. Try Aveiro's famous Ovos Moles

Don't leave Aveiro without trying ovos moles, the city's most famous traditional sweet.

Made with egg yolks and sugar, this local speciality is usually presented in small traditional wafer shells. It is also a popular souvenir to take home.

4. Discover the Aveiro salt pans

Aveiro is much more than its city centre.

The surrounding Ria de Aveiro lagoon has played an important role in the region's history, particularly through traditional salt production.

A guided visit to the salt pans allows you to discover how salt is produced, meet the traditional marnoto and learn more about the relationship between the lagoon, salt and local communities.

5. Enjoy a final walk along the canals

Before leaving, take some time to walk beside the canals and enjoy Aveiro at a slower pace.

The combination of water, traditional boats and colourful architecture makes the city particularly beautiful in the late afternoon.

A simple one-day itinerary in Aveiro
